Yes! This is the first step for getting started. Check out race sites and find out all the regulations. Check out the local sites in your province as the rules may vary in different places. Get these rules and thoroughly go through them until it becomes familiar.
Love the Sport
For you to enjoy the sports, you need to like it. Get to meet other competitors, the organizers, and even the spectators and get into the spirit of sportsmanship.
Get Your Equipment Ready
This is another crucial step. Get your equipment together and make sure everything is available before you join the race. Make sure you check all your gears to ensure it meets all race rules for equipment. Always wear your tanks or shirts and ensure the race number is always visible.
You can use any stroke you are good at while swimming but never run towards the shallow end. However, if you are exhausted, you can stand in the water and catch your breath. Do not grab or kick other swimmers. Always ensure you wear your bathing cap and mark sure it is marked. Check for the regulations for suits and get the approved model. You can get your goggles and nose clips, but do not come along with paddles or fins.
You can use any two-wheeled road bike but just make sure the brakes are functional. You can also use hybrid and mountain bikes. Check for the regulations about bike peddles. Most times clipless or baskets peddles are not allowed. Before you start the race, make sure you take note of the marked mount and dismount zone. Always wear your helmet at all times when riding and do not bring along cracked helmets. Before you mount your bike, you have to clip the helmet to your head. Do not cross over into an oncoming path/lane and do not block another cyclist.
You can run at any pace, but you cannot crawl. Pets and pacer bunnies are not allowed. You can check if your area allows for runner strollers.
Spectators or pets are not allowed in the transition zone. Take your bike from the stands and walk it to the marked mount zone. You should also take your bike and return it to the spot where you picked it from. Always come very early and set up your equipment. Check out for the age category start and race start time. Make sure your bike is turned upside down before the race. Also, ensure to clean up your transition area before the race. Always remember to wear your helmet before you mount your bike. The sport is fun and interesting. Be free and make new friends. Enjoy yourself and do not be in a hurry to finish off, lots of things will always slow you down.
